Alex Eala at the Australian Open

Melbourne has been the hardest of the four for her. She lost in the first round of qualifying three years in a row: to Misaki Doi 6-4, 6-7(1), 3-6 in 2023, to Rebecca Peterson 2-6, 5-7 in 2024 and to Jana Fett 5-7, 2-6 in 2025. In January 2026 she was directly accepted into the main draw for the first time and won the opening set 6-0 against Alycia Parks, but lost 6-0, 3-6, 2-6.

The Australian Open 2027 main draw runs from 17 to 31 January 2027, with qualifying and the opening week from 11 to 16 January. Melbourne is three hours ahead of Philippine time (PHT, UTC+8) during the event, so an 11:00 start in Melbourne is 08:00 in Manila. As a top-20 player she can expect direct acceptance, although the entry list has not been published yet.

Roland Garros: clay is still a work in progress

At Roland Garros she reached the final qualifying round in 2024, beating Yexin Ma and Taylah Preston before losing to Julia Riera 6-4, 6-7(3), 4-6. In 2025 she made her Grand Slam main-draw debut in Paris and lost to Emiliana Arango 0-6, 6-2, 3-6. In 2026 Iva Jovic, then ranked No. 17, beat her 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. Clay is statistically her weakest surface: she is 4-6 on it in 2026, compared with 26-13 on hard courts and 12-4 on grass.

Alex Eala at Wimbledon: her best Grand Slam so far

Grass has produced her best results, and Wimbledon is where she has gone furthest. In 2024 she won two qualifying matches before losing to Lulu Sun 6-7(3), 5-7. In 2025, her first main draw at the All England Club, she took the first set against Barbora Krejcikova but lost 6-3, 2-6, 1-6.

Wimbledon 2026: beating the defending champion

Seeded 29th in 2026, she beat Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-2 and Maya Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. In the third round she faced defending champion Iga Swiatek, then ranked No. 3, saved two set points in the first-set tiebreak and won 7-6(9), 6-2. In the fourth round she lost to Jasmine Paolini 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 – but the run made her the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a major in the Open Era.

Alex Eala at the US Open: where the Grand Slam story began

New York holds a special place in her career. In 2019 she qualified for the junior main draw, the first Filipino to do so at a junior major since 1991, and in 2022 she won the girls' singles title there. In the professional event she lost in the final qualifying round in 2024 to Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 1-6, 4-6.

US Open 2025: the first win for the Philippines

On 24 August 2025 she beat 14th seed Clara Tauson 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(11), recovering from 1-5 down in the third set. It was the first Grand Slam main-draw singles win by a Filipino in the Open Era. In the second round she lost to Cristina Bucsa 4-6, 3-6.

US Open 2026: a seeded run to the third round

Seeded 17th in 2026, she beat Mary Stoiana 6-1, 6-2 and Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-4. In the third round Iva Jovic edged her 5-7, 6-3, 5-7 in a match of about three hours on Arthur Ashe Stadium, after Eala had led 4-2 in the deciding set.

Junior Grand Slam titles

Before turning her attention to the women's tour, Eala won three junior majors. She took the girls' doubles at the Australian Open 2020 with Priska Madelyn Nugroho of Indonesia and at Roland Garros 2021 with Oksana Selekhmeteva. At the US Open 2022, seeded 10th, she won the girls' singles without dropping a set in six matches and beat second seed Lucie Havlickova 6-2, 6-4 in the final – the first junior Grand Slam singles title for a Filipino. Her best other junior singles results were a semifinal at Roland Garros 2020 and a quarterfinal at the US Open 2021.
